The Catalan real estate market began 2016 with remarkable strength, consolidating the growth trend observed in recent quarters. According to data for the first quarter of the year, 30,027 home sales were recorded, the highest quarterly figure since mid-2007, confirming the dynamism of residential demand in the region.
This growth is occurring within a context marked by population increase and the creation of new households. Catalonia has added nearly 90,000 inhabitants and more than 34,000 new households in the last year, a trend that continues to drive the need for housing. However, new construction remains insufficient to absorb this demand, contributing to continued pressure on market prices.
Mortgage activity is also showing positive growth, supported by interest rates that, although they have moved beyond the downward phase, remain at moderate levels from a historical perspective. Meanwhile, international demand continues to play a significant role in the Catalan market, maintaining a prominent presence in sales transactions.
Overall, the indicators reflect a robust residential market, supported by persistent demand and limited supply. The combination of demographic, economic, and financial factors allows for a favorable outlook for the coming quarters, solidifying Catalonia's position as one of the most active real estate markets in the country.
